Geva Mentor =
The Greensborough Netball Club had the pleasure of hosting Melbourne Vixen Geva Mentor at a special training session for our 2015 players last week.

Standing at 188cm, Geva is the starting Goal Keeper for the 2014 ANZ Championship premiership winning Vixens and also plays in the England national team. Geva’s impressive list of netball achievements include:

  • ANZ Championship All Star GK (2012, 2013, 2014)
  • Melbourne Vixens MVP (2012, 2014), Melbourne Vixens R/UP MVP (2013)
  • Top of the table in Intercepts and Deflections in the ANZ Championship (2013)
  • ANZ Championship premiership – Melbourne Vixens (2014)
  • ANZ Championship premiership – Adelaide Thunderbirds (2010)
  • ANZ Championship Grand Finalists – Adelaide Thunderbirds (2009), Melbourne Vixens (2012)
  • Commonwealth Games (England) (2002,2006,2010, 2014)
  • World Netball Championships (England) (2003,2007,2011)

After the success of GNC winning the Northern Netball Leagues Section Two Premiership last season, the key focus of this special training session was defence as we continue to work through our preseason training themes.

Assistant Coach Natalie Jolley says, “Geva was amazing and all defenders should take note from what they learnt. It’s clear that she’s a natural coach and she took time out to speak with almost every one of our 40 players and provide valuable one on one feedback.”

GNC’s four teams were divided into two squads, with each squad being coached by Geva for 40 minutes in a number of footwork, defence and timing drills.

GNC President Jacqui Martin says, “Geva was an absolute pleasure to have at training and it was an invaluable experience for our club to have someone of such a high international standard to teach our netballers who range in age from 15 right through to late 30’s. She was lovely, encouraging and you can easily see why she is one of the World’s favourite netballers.”

Anyone interested in hosting a Melbourne Vixen netballer at a club training session should contact Stacey O’Neill, Programs Development Manager at Netball Victoria by phone: 03 9321 2271 or email stacey.oneill@netballvic.com.au.

GNC would like to thank Geva Mentor, Netball Victoria and the Melbourne Vixens for this wonderful opportunity.

NNL and NFL Best and Fairest

Last night the NNL and NFL held the Best and Fairest count for the 2014 season.  Greensborough Netball Club had two players in attendance knowing they had both polled within the top five of their respective section.

Thea from our section seven team, a solid shooter that had a fantastic season, polled exceedingly well for her first NNL season of netball.  Thea was named in third place, gathering 17 votes from the NNL umpires during the season.  This is an exceptional achievement for a classy player that only started playing netball in February this year after making the transition over from soccer.

Sharna from our premiership winning section two team, played every minute of every game in season 2014 and captained the team from the GK anchor all year.  Sharna made the transition to GNC from the Euroa Football Netball Club in the Goulburn Valley Football Netball League, where she played at the top level for the last few seasons as a shooter.  In her first year of the NNL, Sharna also polled exceptionally well with the umpires and finished the count in second place.

Also last night, GFC’s premiership winning ruckman, Michael Hooper, finished in third place of the NFL’s Best and Fairest to cap off a great season.

The Football Club also had four players listed in the 2014 team of the year, Daniel McLinden, Tim Bongetti, Matthew Hyde and Michael Hooper along with the coach of the year our coach Robert Hyde.

Congratulations to all the Greensborough players and coaches on this fantastic achievement to top off 2014 as the Year of the Boro!

This Friday night is the club’s Best and Fairest count, stay tuned for the results live from our Facebook page.

2014 NNL section seven runners up

2014-NNL-DIV-7-RUNNERS-UPGreensborough team five took on the highly fancied North Heidelberg in the Northern Netball Leagues, section seven Grand Final last Friday night at Parade College.  The girls went into the game not having beaten North all year and finishing second on the ladder to North’s first place.

The game started off goal for goal, with both GS for each team starring.  North took awhile to get going but half way through the first quarter their GS was shooting goals from everywhere and not missing.  To Boro’s credit, we kept pace with North and at quarter time were only a goal down, 5-6 Norths way.  The second quarter started off with some quick successful shots from North’s super shooter, and they increased their lead.  Halftime saw a regrouping of the players and some direction from coach Sharon Ashworth.

The Boro girls came back on the court in the third quarter with some fire and half way through the third quarter, got the score back to 14-16 North’s way.  Just before three quarter time, a few handy turnovers from Norths GD who went on to take out MVP of the match, pushed the ball back into North’s circle and they capitalised with a few quick goals, bringing the score up to 17-22 Norths way.  The boro girls kept the fight going during the last quarter, but unfortunately went down to North in the end, final score 19-28.

Team five largely consisted of new players to the Boro this year, and with hard work and dedication made it right through to the Grand Final.  Congratulations on a fabulous season.  Bring on 2015!
