NNL Round 5 results

Boro’s four teams took the court last Friday night at Parade College, RMIT Bundoora and Loyola College for the NNL’s round five.

GNC 1 took on Northcote Park in the section one clash.  Northcote Park got the jump on Boro early in the first quarter and were seven goals up at one point.  During the second and third quarters Boro worked tirelessly to bring back the score and jumped ahead by the three quarter time break.  The last quarter was tightly contested   but Boro eventually coming out on top with a two goal thriller.

A new look GNC 2 took on Diamond Creek in the section two clash and had a percentage boosting win by 12 goals at RMIT. Congratulations girls on a solid win!

GNC 4 had an epic game against Epping which ended in a 24 all draw.  A great effort by our section seven team with some key position players out with injuries.

GNC 3 faced West Preston Lakeside who after grading came down from section three into section four.  GNC 3 to date has had a draw, one goal loss, three goal loss and a three goal win.  The first quarter the girls came out of the blocks strongly and played a solid team game full of rebounds, strong passes and accurate shooting. The girls continued to build on their lead throughout the game and at the final siren defeated West Preston Lakeside, 34-19.

The three wins and the draw look to keep all Boro teams firmly cemented in the top four of each of our respective sections.

Congratulations to all of our players and coaches and a huge thank you to our supporters that have been scoring and attending our games.

GNC learn defensive skills from the best

Geva Mentor =
The Greensborough Netball Club had the pleasure of hosting Melbourne Vixen Geva Mentor at a special training session for our 2015 players last week.

Standing at 188cm, Geva is the starting Goal Keeper for the 2014 ANZ Championship premiership winning Vixens and also plays in the England national team. Geva’s impressive list of netball achievements include:

  • ANZ Championship All Star GK (2012, 2013, 2014)
  • Melbourne Vixens MVP (2012, 2014), Melbourne Vixens R/UP MVP (2013)
  • Top of the table in Intercepts and Deflections in the ANZ Championship (2013)
  • ANZ Championship premiership – Melbourne Vixens (2014)
  • ANZ Championship premiership – Adelaide Thunderbirds (2010)
  • ANZ Championship Grand Finalists – Adelaide Thunderbirds (2009), Melbourne Vixens (2012)
  • Commonwealth Games (England) (2002,2006,2010, 2014)
  • World Netball Championships (England) (2003,2007,2011)

After the success of GNC winning the Northern Netball Leagues Section Two Premiership last season, the key focus of this special training session was defence as we continue to work through our preseason training themes.

Assistant Coach Natalie Jolley says, “Geva was amazing and all defenders should take note from what they learnt. It’s clear that she’s a natural coach and she took time out to speak with almost every one of our 40 players and provide valuable one on one feedback.”

GNC’s four teams were divided into two squads, with each squad being coached by Geva for 40 minutes in a number of footwork, defence and timing drills.

GNC President Jacqui Martin says, “Geva was an absolute pleasure to have at training and it was an invaluable experience for our club to have someone of such a high international standard to teach our netballers who range in age from 15 right through to late 30’s. She was lovely, encouraging and you can easily see why she is one of the World’s favourite netballers.”

Anyone interested in hosting a Melbourne Vixen netballer at a club training session should contact Stacey O’Neill, Programs Development Manager at Netball Victoria by phone: 03 9321 2271 or email stacey.oneill@netballvic.com.au.

GNC would like to thank Geva Mentor, Netball Victoria and the Melbourne Vixens for this wonderful opportunity.

GNC announces Head Coach for season 2015

GNC Media ReleaseThe Greensborough Netball Club sadly announce the departure of 2014 Head Coach Alan Watson at the conclusion of this season, however we wish him all the best with his 2015 appointment with the Melbourne University Lightning in the Victorian Netball League and we thank him for his time and efforts during the current season.

Taking over the reins as the Head Coach for the Greensborough Netball Club in 2015 is current assistant coach, Sharon Ashworth.

Sharon, originally an A-grade mid-courter from the Beechworth Football and Netball Club in the Ovens and King and Tallangatta and Districts leagues has been with the Greensborough Netball Club (GNC) since late 2013.

Previous to GNC, Sharon was Head Coach for the under 15’s with the Banyule & District Netball Association (BDNA) for three years and prior to that coached the under 17’s division one team and the open division four representative teams.

GNC President Nicole Doherty says, “Sharon has a style of coaching that is straight to the point but in a positive constructive way, players look up to her and are eager to learn new skills at training each week and love the encouragement she gives on the sidelines during games and when your off the court. Sharon has been a bright fresh spark to Greensborough Netball Club and I am honoured to have her as Head Coach for 2015.”

Sharon currently coaches team two in the Northern Netball League (NNL) division two, and team five in division seven. Both teams are likely to finish in second position on their respective ladders at the conclusion of the regular season for the NNL this Friday night.

GNC division two shooter Chantelle Power says, “Sharon is nurturing and positive with her feedback, but isn’t afraid to give it to us straight! She’s got an amazing netball brain and understands the game better than most. She’s brought back my love for the game and I’ve had the most amazing and fun season being coached by her.”

Team two Captain, Sharna Enright adds, “The most influential aspect is Sharon’s leadership. Her knowledge and commitment makes her a incredible coach and mentor. The competition has been very tough throughout section two this season so we are all very excited and thrilled about making finals.”

With the 2014 season nearing completion, GNC has experienced many successes throughout the year. “Two out of the five teams are featuring in the finals series and with the teams that will miss the finals, they are more than worthy of a finals place. GNC has a strong list of players at the club and look forward to featuring well over the coming weeks and into season 2015,” says Sharon.

Sharon’s key coaching aims are defensive pressure and providing a culture of netball excellence, motivation and enthusiasm for players.

Current starting division two Goal Defence Francesca Hickman says, “Sharon has been a wonderful coach, and the best I have ever had. She is always positive and encouraging and her attention to the game and individual players is fabulous. She can see what needs to be done during the game to work to our advantage or worked on later during training.”

Sharon is already looking towards season 2015 with, “the appointment of assistant coaches, retaining current players and selection of new players high on the agenda in the next few months.”

Greensborough Netball Club currently has five teams in the NNL and are looking for additional assistant coaches for the 2015 season.

Anyone interested in playing or coaching should contact the club for more information.
