Greensborough team two, finished second on the ladder after the 2014 home and away season to Northcote Park. Both teams met in the 2014 NNL Section Two Grand Final, last Friday night at Parade College.
The Boro girls took the court in the opening quarter with steely determination. The midcourt, lead by Sammy, Jess and Karina kept firing the ball into the Boro shooters and starting GS Megan wasn’t missing. The first quarter was dominated by the boro, with all seven players on court pulling together to keep the ball in boro’s possession. Quarter time saw Boro leading Northcote Park 8-4. Coach, Sharon Ashworth made the change to rest the players, putting on Super Chan into GS, and Olivia into the midcourt. The start of the second quarter was tight and Northcote came back to within a goal, but the girls quickly snuffed out the Northcote momentum and came back with some super shots, and some fantastic intercepts from Team Captain Sharna in GK, and Francesca in GD and at halftime the girls were up 14-11.
The halftime break was disrupted by three Bundoora Football Players showing up in netball dresses and got a laugh from the crowd.
The third quarter saw the return of Megan to GS and the continuation of GA Issy shooting long bomb goals at whim. A quick succession of goals saw the Boro increase the lead to six goals, 23-17. The last quarter saw Super Chan return to GS and fire off some quick goals, with the boro never giving away a lead, however the Northcote Park girls got some late goals in. The game ended with Boro winning their very first Premiership, final score 29-25.
Congratulations to all our Section Two players and coach Sharon Ashworth. They had a fantastic season, and a good battle with Northcote Park all year.
Greensborough team five took on the highly fancied North Heidelberg in the Northern Netball Leagues, section seven Grand Final last Friday night at Parade College. The girls went into the game not having beaten North all year and finishing second on the ladder to North’s first place.
The game started off goal for goal, with both GS for each team starring. North took awhile to get going but half way through the first quarter their GS was shooting goals from everywhere and not missing. To Boro’s credit, we kept pace with North and at quarter time were only a goal down, 5-6 Norths way. The second quarter started off with some quick successful shots from North’s super shooter, and they increased their lead. Halftime saw a regrouping of the players and some direction from coach Sharon Ashworth.
The Boro girls came back on the court in the third quarter with some fire and half way through the third quarter, got the score back to 14-16 North’s way. Just before three quarter time, a few handy turnovers from Norths GD who went on to take out MVP of the match, pushed the ball back into North’s circle and they capitalised with a few quick goals, bringing the score up to 17-22 Norths way. The boro girls kept the fight going during the last quarter, but unfortunately went down to North in the end, final score 19-28.
Team five largely consisted of new players to the Boro this year, and with hard work and dedication made it right through to the Grand Final. Congratulations on a fabulous season. Bring on 2015!
First up was the division two semi against Northcote Park. The girls had a real battle on their hands and unfortunately an absolute heartbreaker, coming away with a one goal loss, final score 30 to 29.
Next up was the division seven semi against North Heidelberg. The Kennel had just lost the two games during the season and are a real threat moving into the grand final after defeating our girls 33-19.
Both Boro teams have another crack this week. Preliminary Finals are:
7:50pm Greensborough 5 v West Ivanhoe, Parade College
8:15pm Greensborough 2 v Bundoora Comets 2, Parade College
